Our environmental ethos
Bluestone is committed to environmental responsibility. We don’t
claim to be perfect and we don’t claim to have all the answers, but
every aspect of the Bluestone design and operating plan has been
informed by a desire to minimise environmental impact.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of our environmental commitment
is our use of biomass technology. Blue Lagoon, the sports club and
the administration offices will not be heated by electricity or gas
but by boilers fuelled with woodchip and miscanthus grown by local
farmers. Once this carbon-neutral system of heating has been
perfected, we plan to build other energy centres on site and see
how much of our power demand we can meet in this way.
All new Bluestone buildings are built from sustainable
materials, and have been designed to maximise energy efficiency.
The lodges, for example, all have low-energy lighting, triple
glazing and high-value insulation, and most (the south-facing ones)
have solar panels* to heat water.
Naturally, anything that can be re-used or recycled is re-used
or recycled, our on-site vehicles will be electric and fitted with
photovoltaic solar panels, we’re exploring the role biofuels can
play, and our purchasing policies favour local companies and those
with good environmental records.
There are many more measures aimed at caring for and enhancing
the natural environment within the Bluestone design and operating
plan, and we’re using the Green Dragon environmental management
system to tie everything together.
