Castles of Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire offers the opportunity to
explore some of the most impressive monuments of the Middle
Ages. Visit the Guest Information Centre when you arrive at
Bluestone and you can be guided to the most impressive in the area,
such as Llawhaden Castle, Carew Castle and Pembroke Castle.
Llawhaden Castle
The magnificent Llawhaden Castle is a
12th century earth and timber ringwork fortress, founded by Bishop
Bernard. It was built as a fortified palace of the bishops of St
David's, and has since been captured, destroyed and totally rebuilt
by the14th century.
Carew Castle
Carew Castle has a history spanning 2,000
years and is set in a stunning location, overlooking a 23 acre
millpond. The site incorporates an impressive 11th
century Celtic Cross, the only restored Tidal Mill in Wales, a
medieval bridge and a picnic area all linked by a delightful mile
round
walk.
Pembroke Castle
This mighty fortress is largely intact, and
its endless passages, tunnels and stairways are great fun to
explore.
