Wales’ capital city will be going carnival crazy this summer with one of the most flamboyant events within the Cardiff Festival yet, thanks to support from Pembrokeshire’s luxury Bluestone National Park Resort.
Bluestone is supporting Cardiff Carnival 2012 and the South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) group as part of a package that will bring flamboyant carnival art, colour and style to the city on Saturday, 4th August.
“Bluestone is all about free range fun and we’re very pleased to be working with Cardiff Carnival and SWICA to bring some of that free range fun to the Welsh capital this summer,” said Yvonne Buckingham, Head of Marketing at Bluestone National Park Resort.
The five star short break destination near Narberth in West Wales is sponsoring the overall Cardiff Carnival 2012 as well as SWICA and its involvement in bringing flamboyant carnival acts to the city’s streets, culminating in a massive carnival procession on the day.
In addition, SWICA carnival artists and dancers will be hosting free carnival arts workshops in the three weeks leading up to the carnival to get as many people into the spirit. These will include costume making and dance sessions at the Carnival Camp at Channel View Leisure Centre in Grangetown Cardiff.
“And if that wasn’t enough we’re pleased to be working with SWICA to bring their carnival expertise to Bluestone itself this summer,” added Yvonne. “They’ve been working with our activity staff on carnival arts, including mask making, samba drumming and circus skills which our on-site workshop team will be bringing to Bluestone throughout our very own Summer Festival,” added Yvonne.
This will culminate in a big carnival weekend at Bluestone on Saturday, 1st and Sunday 2nd September when SWICA’s flagship performance group, The Carnival Crew, will host family carnival workshops for guests and amazing costumed drum and dance shows over the weekend.
“When I founded Cardiff Carnival in 1990 I could not have dreamt that it would still be going strong 23 years later. Bluestone’s sponsorship of Cardiff Carnival 2012 has allowed SWICA to totally revamp the carnival into a new format this summer.”
“Cardiff Carnival 2012 will take over the city centre and there will be a new day-long open-air stage in The Hayes featuring the best of carnival – with a taste of Circus, Burlesque, African Drum and Dance, Brazilian Capoeira and more besides.”
“SWICA and Cardiff Carnival look forward to a continuing and mutually beneficial relationship with Bluestone : they are a great fit a as sponsors as we are both about quality family fun” said Steve Fletcher, Artistic Director of SWICA.
