Best of British Children’s Authors Line up for Pembrokeshire Book Festival
Pembrokeshire's first ever Children's Book Festival is being held in October and November 2013. Spread across four days (30th Oct - 2nd Nov 2013), festival-goers will enjoy the delights of some of Britain's best loved children's authors in partnership with Bluestone National Park Resort.
This celebration of the world of children's literature will be taking place at a selection of venues including Bluestone and The Queens Hall in Narberth. Launching the festival are four fantastic authors who will be going to share their unique, adventurous and beautifully creative books with everyone.
Steve Cole leads the way on day one of the festival and is well placed to kick off events as he is now one of the fastest selling authors in the UK. Cole has been described as slightly wacky and brilliantly entertaining. While Steve has been an editor and written many novels and articles, his real love is creating children’s books. Cole's is best known for his 'Astrosaurs' series and his best selling series with, 'Cows-in-Action', 'Astrosaurs Academy' and 'Slime Squad'. He will be entertaining everyone with stories and anecdotes from his most recent books 'Z-Rex' and the 'Tripwire'.
Jonny Duddle, from North Wales is another award winner whose artwork is also gathering fans globally from as far afield as Hollywood and the computer gaming world. Having worked on a pirate ship and also as an art teacher in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, it is no wonder Duddle’s work spans a selection of award winning and bestselling picture books such as the very popular 'Pirate Cruncher' and 'The Pirates Next Door' which is the current Waterstones Book of the Year.
Duddle’s expertise in character development is well sought after bringing characters to life and receiving commissions from the likes of Sony, Warner Brothers, Vista and Universal Companies who have all worked with him. In Duddle’s crafty hand in the Aardmann Film ‘The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists’ we see his most recent film work and he brings his imaginative illustration workshop to the festival.
Gareth P. Jones, has carved a niche with his hugely entertaining gothic tales, which have won plenty of awards including the Blue Peter Award 2012 for The Thornthwaite Inheritance. His style of writing and macabre sense of humour shows through in his work, and as well as his previous career in television appearing on programmes like the Big Breakfast and Richard and Judy, Gareth has become one of the UK’s most successful children’s authors. His Dragon Detective Agency series and Ninja Meercats have been a huge hit and reinforce his position at the top of the children’s charts.
The final award winning author and illustrator making the initial line-up for this year’s festival is Lydia Monks. After dabbling in the world of fashion Monks decided that her passion lied with illustrating. With a first degree in illustration Monks worked as a Freelance illustrator for many newspapers and magazines, including 'The Times', 'The Evening Standard' and 'Just 17'. She decided it was children's books she wanted to illustrate, so, she wrote her own book called, 'I Wish I Were A Dog' which went on to win the 'Bronze Smarties Price' in 1999. Since then she has illustrated many best selling books for authors including current Children’s Laureate, Julia Donaldson's 'What The Ladybird Heard', 'The Singing Mermaid' and 'Sharing a Shell' and her own books 'Babbit' and 'Aaaargh Spider'.
Pamela Joseph, Commercial Director of Bluestone National Park Resort commented: 'We are delighted to announce the authors that have been secured for the upcoming book festival. We are committed to bringing the very best literary talent to West Wales and this first festival will be a real celebration of Children’s books. We have an excellent range of activity planned over the festival week.'
