Teenage Cancer Trust boosted by £30k thanks to William’s Antarctic trek
Teenage Cancer Trust has been boosted with a donation of £30,000 raised by Pembrokeshire businessman and entrepreneur, William McNamara OBE, who trekked to the South Pole in aid of the charity.
William, who is CEO of the luxury short break holiday destination Bluestone National Park Resort near Narberth, Pembrokeshire, was so taken by the stories he heard from young people while visiting a Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Cardiff that he decided to undertake the mammoth trek.
“I was very moved by the determination of those young people who I met at the ward and I wanted to do something for them and other young people who suffer from cancer and need the support of a charity like the Teenage Cancer Trust,” said William.
He endured temperatures below -40°c and storms blowing at up to 100mph during the trek. He walked the last 100kms unsupported.
Over the past year William has raised the £30,000 through the Bluestone Foundation, a charitable trust set up by Bluestone, following his trek with donations from individuals, businesses and organisations, including schools where the pupils followed his progress.
Laura Scowen of the Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “William’s trek is something many of us cannot comprehend. But we know how much he was touched by visiting the Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Cardiff. We thank William for his efforts and for raising such a sum for Teenage Cancer Trust.”
Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young people with cancer aged between 13 and 24 years of age.
It builds specialist units within NHS hospitals, bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. It wants every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live
