Wales and Ospreys rugby star Ryan Jones has returned from Australia well and truly facing the music – taking up samba drumming for the summer!
Taking time out after the hectic Wales tour and still celebrating the Grand Slam victory, Ryan’s been getting into the summer festival spirit with family before the start of training for the new season with the Ospreys.
“It’s been a manic few months and before I headed out to Oz we’d already planned to have a family break for some relaxation and fun – although I didn’t quite expect to be playing the samba drum and building rafts!” said Ryan who’s been spending time at Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire.
Along with wife Ailsa and family he’s been enjoying preparations for Bluestone’s Summer Festival which takes place throughout July and August, leading up to its very own carnival on 1 and 2 September.
“When you’ve been playing all season, then having the Six Nations Grand Slam success before the tour Down Under, there comes a time when you just need to say ‘right, we’re getting away to chill.’ And that’s what we’ve done at Bluestone.
“But as usual I can’t sit still and the preparations for the Bluestone Summer Festival looked like a bit of an opportunity to have some fun. We’ve been trying out the samba drum session which is just great – plenty of energy used and a lot of fun – as well as loads of other activities.”
He added: “A week away from it all and it puts everything back in to perspective. Chilling with a few cheeky drinks, a splash about in the Blue Lagoon waterpark, some great food, and a bit of a treat at The Well Spa. Well, we all need some TLC. And I know the other lads and their families will be doing the same.”
In fact it’s been a week of rugby mania at Bluestone with internationals Rhys Gillard Richard Hillard choosing Bluestone for their R&R.
Bluestone’s Summer Festival is all about carnival and festival fun, with a wide range of events and activities for the whole family throughout the week and weekends, culminating in a big Summer Carnival on 1st and 2nd September.
The carnival experts from SWICA have been working with Bluestone staff on some great carnival capers and activities that can be enjoyed throughout the summer.
“I could really get into this summer festival thing,” said Ryan, “and we might well head back for the big carnival in September.”
