The Halloween Fire Festival

The Halloween Fire Festival – A Celtic Tradition

In celebration of Calan Gaeaf, Bluestone will be creating its very own Celtic Fire Festival which takes place between 20th October and 4th November*.

A Calan Gaeaf (pronounced Calan Gy-Av) is the name of the first day of winter in Pembrokeshire and it is observed on 1 November.

To celebrate this occasion, Bluestone will be a host a range of activities and entertainment based around Halloween, such as creating fire masks and corn dollies to spooky trails and stories.

Get into the Halloween theme and dress up as spooks and ghouls and join our torch lit parade after sunset, but look out for the faeries and other naughty spirits that will be roaming about causing mischief.

The evening will culminate in our spectacular fire show in the village with music and mayhem from the Bluestone crew. So come and join in the festivities for our very first Halloween Fire Festival and enjoy a time of feasting, dancing and celebration.

About Calan Gaeaf

A Calan Gaeaf (pronounced Calan Gy-Av) is the name of the first day of winter in Pembrokeshire and it is observed on 1 November.

After the Harvest moon, when the last of the farmers crops are in, the rural celebrations begin. The last sheaf of corn to be cut is called the Caseg Fedi (Harvest Mare - a Welsh Corn Dolly) and is hung above the hearth in the Yard until the following spring when it is mixed in with the new seed to show it how to grow.

It is believed that the spirit that lived in the cornfield died when the corn was cut. A corn dolly is plaited from the last sheaf of corn thereby providing a resting place for the corn spirit and ensuring the continuity of the harvests next year.

In true Celtic tradition the festival was previously held over seven days, three days before, and three days after, the eve of November 1 / October 31 (the Celts measured the day from sunset to sunset).

*The fire show will run on the following dates - October 21st, 25th, 28th and November 1st, 4th.
