A Beautiful Walk Around St David's Head Pembrokeshire

By Kathryn Slade St Davids

St David's Head in Pembrokeshire is a particularly beautiful area of the county, it’s a great place to explore and this part of the coastal path is easy enough to cover with family.

There are still remnants of the Iron Age community that once called it home with a fort and remains of huts.

Point of interest Finding St David's Head

Miles from Bluestone: 27
Walk Distance: 3.5 miles
Minimum Time: 2 hours
Level of Difficulty: Easy with some climbs
Path Type: Coastal Path and heath land
Starting Point: Whitesands Beach

Here is the route that we suggest:
  • From Whitesands head along the road past the caravan site and turn left along a road. Bear right where it splits and continue around the left hand bend along to the buildings. Head between the houses and then carry along to the gate.
  • Turn right onto the open heathland and follow the footpath beneath Carn Llidi. There are some amazing views from this point!
  • Pass the track that drops to the youth hostel on the right and continue on keeping right wherever the track forks. Then head over the crest and downhill to the corner of a wall where a clear track runs diagonally left towards coast.
  • Follow this track along to the coast path where the coast path along the cliff tops starts. At Porth Llong the path bears right. The headland is covered in paths but try and stick as close to the ones along the cliff tops as possible.
  • From the tip of the peninsula, turn left and make your way along the rocky outcrops on southern side of the headland. Approaching Porthmelgan, you’ll pick up an obvious path near the cliff tops which you can follow along to the small footbridge over the stream.
  • Climb up the steps on the other side. Continue to a kissing gate, where the National Trust land ends, and maintain your direction. Pass above Porth Lleuog and the rocky promontory of Trwynhwrddyn - worth a visit in its own right.
  • There is quite a steep way down to end the walk but then you will be back at Whitesands Beach.
