A day out at Dr Beynon's Bug Farm in St David's

By Kathryn Slade Dr Beynons Bug Farm 620

If you’re looking for something that’s that little bit different to do during your upcoming Bluestone stay then look no further. Around 25 miles from the resort, past one of Pembrokeshire’s most beautiful beaches, in the country’s smallest city you’ll find Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm.

So what is the Bug Farm?

The Bug Farm was established by Dr Sarah Beynon and her lovely team in 2016. They pride themselves on being a friendly and quirky attraction for adults and families alike - from our visit  they’re certainly doing a fantastic job.

What can I see?

When you arrive you’ll be met by the friendly team at the reception who will help you to plan your trip around the Bug Farm with a handy map.

You’ll head from the reception out into the courtyard, and into the Bug Museum where beautiful displays showcase butterflies, beetles and other bugs, from the UK and beyond. It’s a great introduction to bugs especially for those who might find these crawlies a little creepy! The information boards are packed with information, and you’ll find out everything from their life cycles to how they’ve inspired scientific progressions.

Exhibition Wall

From here you’ll head into the Bug Zoo, where you can watch as the fascinating invertebrates go about their days. My personal favourites were the ants who were busily making their way around the room in their maze of tunnels.

Out from here you’ll find a lovely outdoor space with gardens, a nature walk and a pen with goats! There’s an indoor play area for the children so that they can run around and work up an appetite ready for Grub Kitchen!

Grub Kitchen

We’d highly recommend stopping for lunch here; the UK’s first full-time edible insect café/restaurant!

There’s a range of dishes on the menu with everything cooked on site using fresh, flavour-packed,  local and sustainable ingredients. Give their specialities a go including their signature bug burger, GFC (Grub Fried Chicken!), mealworm humus with freshly baked flatbread, and of course their famous cricket cookies.

Grub Kitchen

If you don’t feel like braving the bugs (even though they’re surprisingly scrumptious), there are always vegetarian, vegan, local meat and children’s dishes available too.

Grub Kitchen is open whenever the Bug Farm is. Lunch is served from 12:00 noon – 2:30pm (until 3:30pm during school holidays) and teas, coffees and cakes are available all day. Cwtch up inside or take a seat outside in the courtyard overlooking the farm.

Check out www.grubkitchen.co.uk for more information and sample menus.

There are outdoor picnic benches if you plan to bring your own picnic too!

Meet the Bugs

A must for your visit is a meet and greet with the stars of the show! It’s your chance to hold, and learn even more about the remarkable creatures under the guidance of The Bug Farm team in this 30 minutes session.

Stick Insects
