Gift Ideas for St Dwynwens Day 2016

By Kathryn Slade love heart

Did you know that here in Wales we have our own Patron Saint of Lovers? Dydd Santes Dwynwen is celebrated every year on the 25th of January. Much like Valentine’s Day it’s a chance to tell the ones that we love how we feel about them.

Because the day falls on a Monday this year you could escape to Bluestone for one of our luxurious overnight break from just £95 per couple. This price includes a delicious 3 course meal in our new Oak tree restaurant as well as a spa entry and a night in one of our cosy studio apartments so everything is sorted. You could always make a card and write about this surprise inside! We will let you take credit for the idea though naturally.

If you are looking for a smaller trinket present then it is traditional to give a love spoon to celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day. They are all completely individual meaning that you can find one that is perfect for the message you want to say.

There are a few variations on the story but this is the one that I was always told so I’ll share it with you. Dwynwen lived in Wales during the 5th century; she fell in love with a prince who she couldn’t marry as her father had arranged that she should marry someone else. She begged God to help her forget her prince and in the night she was visited by an angel which would erase all memory of Maelon and turn him to ice. God then gave three wished to Dwynwen. Her first wish was that Maelon be thawed; her second that God meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers; and third, that she should never marry. All three were fulfilled, and as a mark of her thanks, Dwynwen devoted herself to God’s service for the rest of her life.

History of Valentines Day St Valentine and St Dwynwen

Every year, on 14 February, we celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day. This martyred saint is chiefly remembered for one thing - that he is the patron saint of lovers. But who was Valentine, and how did he come to be associated with love and lovers?
