Guest Services Success at Llanelli Multi Sport Festival 2018

By Rhys Williams Guest Services Team

On Friday the 11th of May, three members of Bluestone’s Guest Services team took on the Sospan Fach open water swim at Llanelli Multi Sport Festival 2018.

The challenging swim took place at the North Dock Llanelli and covered up to 1500 metres in open water. Speaking to the group of staff from our Guest Services team Kate, Emma and Ellen were all nervous and excited to have taken the challenge on.

Emma, our Guest Services supervisor took on the 750m open water course. “Swimming has never been my strength at all so I wanted to try a smaller distance to see how I got on with open water swimming. As I have never tried open water swimming before, I was really nervous and scared but had the support of Ellen and Kate” – Emma Said. Emma explained that her inspiration for competing was down to the completion of the Vietnam to Cambodia cycling challenge which she had been specially selected to do through the Bluestone Foundation.  The “V2C” cycle took place back in October last year and required Emma to do a lot of training. “I have come to learn that I actually like exercise and am keen to enter different events” - Emma said. On completing her open water swim, Emma was overjoyed to learn that she had finished as the 7th fastest female in her distance.

Ellen and Kate who both worked in our Blue Lagoon swimming pool before moving to Guest Services opted for the longer distance of 1500 meters.

Ellen and Kate explained that they had wanted to start open water swimming for a while and when Emma said that she'd booked the Sospan swim, it seemed like a good opportunity to give it a go. “It made it easier to sign up knowing that some of the other girls from work were doing it too” – Ellen said.

Ellen has always been a strong pool swimmer but had never tried open water swimming before, and trained in the pool a mile at a time whenever she wasn’t working or looking after her two daughters.

“Having never tried open water swimming before, the most challenging aspect was the salt water” - Ellen said. “I spent 95% of the swim concentrating on not letting the water into my mouth”. Ellen’s hard work and concentration certainly paid off as she placed 3rd in the swim!

Kate explained how she had been taking part in a 5km swimathon with her two children
and that acted as training for the Sospan Fach Swim.

Having a strong background in swimming, Kate describes herself as a “water baby” and how being in the water comes very natural to her.  As a result Kate placed 1st in her category but didn’t realise until they were calling her name to go on stage.

Flowing on from the success of this event Kate has now set her sights on the C2C challenge to walk 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast path with 9 other Bluestone employees for the Bluestone Foundation.
