How to plan a holiday at Bluestone with under 5s

By Paul Burton

So you’re planning your first trip to Bluestone. Excited yet? You should be. We’ve got everything you need to make family holiday memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’re coming with toddlers and young ones in tow - don’t fear. There’s plenty to keep children entertained whether you’re coming to us for a short break for the weekend or a longer stay. Our staff will make your stay as stress-free as possible.

We’re decidedly free range - we’re not about schedules but we can help you organise your time with us. We’ve got 500 acres of Pembrokeshire countryside to explore, roads perfect for learning to ride bikes on and fantastic play areas. So here are a few suggestions for making the most of it.

Choose your accommodation

The joy of the UK staycation is on the rise - according to research more than half of Brits are planning to holiday on these shores this year. And when the beauty of Pembrokeshire is so easily within reach, why choose anywhere else? Our luxury lodges and cottages come in different shapes and sizes - but they are all beautifully decorated with local art, expansive kitchens and bathrooms, and large, soft beds made with crisp cotton.

If there’s four of you, then a two-bedroom cottage might suit you and put you right in the middle of the village’s shops and restaurants and in easy reach of our play area. Our self catering lodges offer much more space to live and play in and there are plenty of options and sizes - they offer easy access right out into the countryside so the little ones can embrace the outdoors right out the door. They all come with high chairs, stair gates and travel cots as standard - leaving you space in the car for the fun things.

Get your buggy

Buggy

Pop the kids on the back and get exploring! There’s lot to find at Bluestone, and our buggies are a great fun way to get around - not to mention a hit with children. They’re such a novelty the little ones love cruising around the resort on them. Find out more about buggy hire here.

Hit the play area and explore the village

Once you’ve arrived and are finding your feet, our play area in the village is an easy way to gently introduce the children to the Bluestone experience. Step into the village, with its very own historical pub, shops, coffee house and restaurants, you’ll find everything you could possibly need during your stay. There’s even a village green, a perfect spot for picnics, and the Treetops adventure playground, complete with a Treetots area just for the very young. You’ll find you’ve discovered the perfect place to meet up and plan your Free Range Fun over a coffee or a pint, or to kick back and watch the world go by.

Visit the Blue Lagoon

It won’t be long after you arrive before the appeal of getting wet and splashing around starts to work its magic on your young entourage (and maybe the older members of the family…). Depending on how long you stay you’ll probably find that one visit to the

Blue Lagoon water park

won’t be enough - it takes wild adventures to the next level in a temperature-controlled environment that’s great throughout the year.

For younger ones, there’s separate wet play areas and Nippers Cove where they can hunt in the rock pools. Visits to the Blue Lagoon are included in your stay so enjoy it as much as you want (and maybe mum and dad can sneak a zoom on a flume or two).

You can stop here for lunch as well - the Blue Lagoon cafe has plenty to offer while surveying the action from the balcony and the Fish Shack has a range of hot and cold drinks, including smoothies, milkshakes, ice creams, sandwiches and snacks.

Book into a show for dinner

The entertainments team here at Bluestone, more commonly known as The Free Rangers are a special group of people whose sole aim is to make you smile, entertain the little ones and keep you entertained during your break. Our dinner shows will change through the year following our seasons, so check What’s On during your stay. For the full free range experience, join us in the Village Hall for our Ranger live show hosted by Ranger Z and Dash the Reindeer. Be prepared to become part of the action in this fun filled family activity, packed with games, sing-a-longs, and wacky experiments too!

Explore nature

We want the heart of your stay to be about Free Range Fun supervised by free range parents! We’re all about counting bugs rather than scores on a computer screen - splashing in puddles and making mud pies. Take a wander along our Nature Trail which meanders through the beautiful ancient forest and alongside the babbling brooks and river. Or team your little free rangers up with our Rangers for our Nature Detectives activity. They’ll explore the areas surrounding our woodland den on this fund activities led by our Ranger you’ll track down all types of creatures, bringing them back to the den. Check out our Mini Rangers page for more details.

Refuel at the WildWood Café

Fancy dining in a woodland with a squirrel? This enchanted world in the Adventure Centre will keep the whole family entertained whilst they’re busy refueling for more important discovering.

Get messy with Shelby Snail

While at the Adventure Centre and watch the story of Shelby Snail come to life through mud, foam, water and play! With each messy station representing a different section of the story, you get a chance to make a mud cake, play with giant bubbles, paint, dance and generally make a mess!

Circus Zone soft play

Combine your trip to the Adventure Centre with a dive into our special Soft Play area. Our Circus Zone is aimed at under five-year-olds and with great entertainment your little ones will be spoilt for choice with a range of soft play, toys and games.

Finish your day at the Farmhouse Grill

There’s plenty of evening options around the resort - try the Farmhouse Grill for quality local produce with local meats and fish grilled in a family atmosphere.

Pan for gold at Camp Smokey

Camp Smokey is our rustic woodland diner where you can enjoy great food and marshmallows around a camp fire. It’s much more than that though - and you can send your tittle tykes to prospect for gold at the camp for their very own golden nugget. They'll be in good hands as Smokey Joe leads the search with some song singing, foot stomping fun. After sieving through lots of rough we promise we won't let them leave without a prize of their own!

Plan a dinner in with Smokey Joe, who throws his very own shindig full of loud music, wild dancing and foot stomping, loved by kids and parents alike. This all takes place against a back drop of towering pine trees and the mouth watering smells of freshly grilled Pembrokeshire produce.

Rejuvenate (the parents) at the spa

Okay, this isn’t strictly for the under 5s, but it wouldn’t be fair if mum or dad didn’t get to steal a few relaxing hours at the Well Spa while the kids are being thoroughly tired out? Recently named Wales' Spa of the Year, our therapists at The Well Spa are highly trained, so talk to them about how you’re feeling and let them recommend treatments or therapies to bring you back to optimum health. Then you’ll be refreshed and ready for more Free Range Fun.

There’s so much more to explore while you’re at Bluestone - take a look at our different breaks here including our mini adventurers breaks aimed at under 5s.
