Jojo Moyes Me Before You Movie Filming In Pembroke

By Kathryn Slade Pembroke Castle

Pembroke has become the temporary home of the feature film ‘Me Before You’ which is being produced by Pinewood Studios. The film is based on the best selling book of the same name by Jojo Moyes which tells the story of a small-town girl who forms a bond with the recently paralysed man who she is caring for.

The filming has been taking place in Pembroke since the 15th of May and is due to be completed on the 20th. It has taken place all around the town including in the historic castle that was the birthplace of Henry VII in 1457.

During the filming there has been some disruption to the town, with roads being closed and a large influx of cast and crew staying in the county. However it has been worth it for many, with the chance to meet some actors from recent Hollywood blockbusters!

The film stars Emilia Clarke who plays Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones has been unrecognisable on set. She has traded her ethereal long dresses and blonde hair for dungaree dresses and brightly coloured tights for this role. Emilia plays Louisa, who works in The Buttered Bun teashop in the town that she lives.

Matthew Lewis has also been spotted in Pembroke during the filming. Matthew starred in the Harry Potter franchise as Neville Longbottom. He looked a lot different from his chubby alter ego when he was seen running alongside Emilia on the riverbanks in the town. It is believed that Matthew is playing Patrick, Louisa’s boyfriend in the novel who she isn’t sure whether she loves or not.

Sam Claflin has also returned to Pembrokeshire for the film. He will be playing Will Traynor, a go-getting twenty-something year old whose life gets turned upside down by a motorcycle accident leaving him quadriplegic. This is a far cry from the previous roles he has played in blockbuster movies, such as Finnick, the athletic victor in the Hunger Games films and William, the heroic childhood friend of Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Pembrokeshire is becoming a firm favourite when choosing locations for feature length films. Some scenes from Snow White and the Huntsman were filmed on Marloes Sands beach which is only 20 miles away from Bluestone. In 2009, Freshwater West beach was chosen to be home to the Shell Cottage in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as well as being used for a fight scene in the 2010 Robin Hood film. Some of the cast and crew from these films have also stayed at Bluestone National Park Resort.

Me Before You was given its release date this week and has been scheduled for release on June 3rd 2016.

Have you been to see the film in the cinema yet? Doesn’t Pembrokeshire look beautiful! If it has tempted you to visit then why not make Bluestone your base for exploring.

All A Quiver For Robin Hood Filming

Tomorrow, Ridley Scott’s version of Robin Hood goes on cinema release, and while anything by the man who helmed Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator is eagerly anticipated by film fans, his latest offering is of particular interest to us Pembrokeshire types.

That’s because it was partly shot in the county, at one of our most beautiful beaches, Freshwater West, to be precise, about a half-hour’s drive from Bluestone.
