Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series to return to the Blue Lagoon in Pembrokeshire

By Harriet Scoot Red Bull Cliff Diving, Pembrokeshire

After the disappointment of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series not being held in Pembrokeshire for the past two years, we’re delighted that Red Bull have chosen to return to the Blue Lagoon for 2016! No.. not the Blue Lagoon waterpark (although they’re more than welcome to zoom the flumes to get in the adrenaline flowing), the Blue Lagoon in Abereiddy! This is a great honour for the county, as the sport is known for taking place in beauty spots around the world.

The National Trust location will be hosting the 7th stage of the world renowned competition, which consists of athletes from all over the world diving off platforms between 20 and 27 metres high to try to score enough points to earn the title of Cliff Diving World Series Winner.Abereiddy was the first British location to host the competition back in 2012, and for 2016 we are also the first British location to host both then men’s and women’s stages of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

This is all very exciting news, but you may be thinking what actually is Cliff Diving? It was established in 2009, and is a bit of a Ronseal sport – it is just diving off a cliff. There’s no specialist equipment and there are very simple and easy to understand rules. The platforms to dive off are usually between 20 and 27 metres above the water level -  that’s almost the same height as 4 of our Ramsey Lodges stacked up! The combination of the stunning surroundings and the adrenaline rush makes it an incredibly popular sport, with thrill seekers and sporting enthusiasts alike.

As you may know, 2016 is the Year of Adventure in Wales, and we’re encouraging as many people as possible to #findyourepic with all of the brilliant adventures available in Pembrokeshire. Why not check out Coasteering and Cliff Diving in Pembrokeshire, there are loads of great supervised areas you can do this around the coast. Our Assistant Marketing Manager has always been a fan of extreme sports, so he was delighted to have the chance to take the GoPro and show off his moves!
