Team GB Rugby Sevens Ladies at Bluestone

By Kathryn Slade Jasmine and Abbie at at Bluestone

Fresh from the Rugby 7’s debut at the Rio Olympics, Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire welcomed two of the stars of the Team GB ladies team for some well deserved rest and relaxation.

The 2016 Olympics marked the debut of rugby sevens and the world was soon gripped by the action thanks to the quality of rugby on display.

There was extra interest for Pembrokeshire as Jasmine Joyce, 20, from St David’s was chosen to represent Team GB in the ladies team. The only Welsh member of the final 12, she soon became a household name after scoring a great try in the opening game against the hosts Brazil.

We met up with Jasmine and her team mate Abbie Brown, 20, from Exeter during their stay to find out more about their time in Rio!

Jasmine in Rio

How did you get into Rugby?

Jasmine: I started playing for my local team with the boys when I was 7. Then when I was 12 I started to play for Haverfordwest girl’s team and it just grew from there.

Abbie: I started playing when I was 6 because my brother played rugby. I joined a local girl’s team at 12 and then moved on to Exeter. I play for Bristol now and England Ladies.

What was your highlight from your experience in Rio?

Jasmine: Definitely scoring a try in the opening game against Brazil.

Abbie: Experiencing the Olympic Village. We shared a lift with Andy Murray and Louis Smith one day, and we saw Usain Bolt around as well.

There has been a lot of build up to the Rio games what will be your next step in rugby?

Abbie: It’s back to the World Series for me in a couple of week’s time with England. Then I’ll be looking forward to the Women’s World Cup in 2017.

Jasmine: For me it’s the 6 Nations next for Wales. Then I’ll start thinking about the Women’s World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and then 2020 in Tokyo!

How are you planning on spending your time at Bluestone?

Jasmine: We’re looking forward to having a relaxing week; we’re off to The Well Spa this afternoon. Then we are heading to watch the live music in the Tafarn with some good food too.

Abbie: We’d like to get out on the lake so we’ve booked to go kayaking. Then hopefully if the weather stays nice we will be having a BBQ.

We are delighted that the girls chose to spend their week relaxing with us at Bluestone and wish them all the best of luck for their sporting futures!
