Children aged 2 to 11 failing to get enough sleep.

The Junior Fine Bedding Company recently ran a survey for parents of children aged 2 to 11, and the results are shocking!

6 out of 10 children in the UK get less than the recommended amount of sleep for their age (on average 11.5 hours sleep a night), and this is all because they consume too much technology and don’t get enough fresh air!

Would you believe 57% of children don’t have a regular bedtime? I’m sure we can all remember our own days of throwing tantrums because “it’s too early” or “but so and so’s mum lets them stay up later than this”, but eventually because mum and dad ARE always right, you’d give in, listen to your bedtime story and shut your eyes.

In 2016, a fifth of children only get one bedtime story per week, whereas a quarter don’t ever get a story! These days, 4 out of 10 children in the age range surveyed have a TV in their room, or their own tablet they play on in bed, which is taking over from the traditional bedtime routines! This digital overload is not only making them tired, but a lack of sleep can affect academic performance, cause memory problems, weaken the immune system, and the most obvious one, cause extremely bad mood swings!

 Bedtime Stories

Obviously here at Bluestone, that makes us really really sad; Free Range Fun, exercise and family time are all extremely important to us. In fact, one of our favourite sayings is “It’s better to have grazes on your knees than sofa marks on your bum”, so let your kids get out and explore, enjoy the fresh air, and make memories that will last longer than an episode of Britain’s Got Talent this summer!

We’re glad to hear the majority of our Facebook fans feel the same. We also had a chat with some of the Dads on hand at Bluestone, and they all shared the same sentiment – the bedtime routine and story time is not just for the kids, it’s also time for them to unwind and just enjoy the little moments with their children, which are incredibly easy to miss when you’re engrossed in checking your emails or catching up on your Facebook!

If you’re worried about your little ones (or even yourself!) not getting enough sleep, here are some top tips to make sure you’re getting the best quality sleep possible;

  1. Stick to a routine - going to bed at the same time every evening helps your body know when it should start getting ready for sleep.
  2. Make the bedroom a peaceful area – this means no electronics (yes, that includes your phone), not too many bright lights and soothing colours.
  3. Get plenty of exercise during the day; even just a walk in the fresh air will help when the night falls. Just not too close to bedtime or you’ll actually wake yourself up!
  4. Relax before bed, whether this is by reading a story, having a bath or just sitting quietly.
  5. Make sure your bedroom is dark, either with thick curtains or an eye mask!
