Year of Adventure Find Your Epic in Wales this year with Bluestone Wales

By Harriet Scoot - Social Guru Coasteering

Visit Wales have teamed up with the Welsh Government to make 2016 the Year of Adventure.

The plan is to have themed years in order to give people (you guys) even more reasons to visit our fantastic country and find your epic... not that you need them, of course. The plan is for 2017 to be the Year of Legends and for 2018 to be the Year of the Sea.

We can’t wait to join in with those too!

We think the Year of Adventure should be the year you try something you’ve always wanted to do, or even to do your favourite adventures again. Don’t get scared, you don’t have to jump off cliffs or kayak off the coast if that doesn’t appeal to you – adventures mean different things to different people. As Tori James, one the ambassadors for the Year of Adventure said; “you’re never too old or too young to start exploring Wales”.

The other ambassadors for 2016 are Bear Grylls, Richard Parks and Maria Leijerstam – they are all extremely passionate about exploring the great outdoors, especially when Wales has so much adventure to offer!

For some people, adventure means chasing the adrenaline rush and getting involved in all the daredevil activities around Wales – in Pembrokeshire this could include water sports, flying through Canaston Woods attached to our Sky Wires Course, climbing around and jumping off the coastline with Coasteering or even galloping across a beach on a horse.

If you’re hungry for adventure, you could go on a culinary experience around Pembrokeshire or even the whole of Wales if you fancy it! You could start by trying some of the delicious local produce in our restaurants on site at Bluestone, checking out some of our local suppliers in Newton Stores – including Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company – who you can also visit down at Freshwater West beach near Pembroke. Their innovative recipes are developed using local seafood and foraged produce and include delicacies such as fresh lobster rolls, Welsh burgers and local ice cream. You could also time your break so you visit during Narberth Food Festival (24th and 25th September 2016) or Pembrokeshire Fish Week (25th June to 3rd July 2016) to sample more culinary delights from our region!

How about going on a historical adventure?

You’d be surprised at how much history we have for such a small country! Did you know there are more castles per square mile than any other country? And Pembrokeshire has a whopping 12 for you to visit, as well as a whole host of other heritage sites, museums to be explored!

Terry John Blustone historian

If you’d like to learn more about the site Bluestone is set on, we have a resident historian who hosts regular walks around the park talking about all the points of interest, such as Newton North Church, and also local history. He even writes blogs for us regularly! In more recent history, Rhys Ifans and Christian Bale were both born in Haverfordwest!

If you fancy something a bit more relaxed, why not go on an adventure around the coast?

It has regularly been chosen as one of the best in the world, with 180 miles of Coastal Path to enjoy, some gorgeous beaches that you won’t believe are in the UK and local wildlife to try and spot, this could be a really exciting adventure for all ages!

Some of the wildlife local to Pembrokeshire include dolphins, whales, seals and puffins... who needs Sea World when we’ve got it all right here?

The Great Weekend of Adventure is Saturday 2nd April and Sunday 3rd April 2016, with events all over Wales... why not come and join in?

But don’t worry if you can’t make it, the fun doesn’t end on Sunday! Throughout the whole of 2016 we’ll be challenging ourselves to adventure as much as possible, and would love you to do the same.

If you like the sound of finding your epic in 2016, why not look at booking a weekend or midweek break at Bluestone to come and enjoy everything Pembrokeshire has to offer?

To get involved and share your adventures in Wales with us, whatever they may be; tag Bluestone Wales in your posts, as well as #findyourepic and #YearofAdventure.
