Bluestone staff pledge to be Dementia Friends

Staff at Bluestone National Park Resort have taken part in training sessions to improve their understanding of Dementia.

The resort in Pembrokeshire, which employs more than 700 people, signed up to the Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Dementia Friends’ programme to help them better understand staff and guests affected by the illness.

The information sessions are delivered by trained staff and volunteers to raise awareness of dementia and give insight into the challenges people with dementia face, and the small changes you can make at work and home to support them.

The programme, which is being delivered across the UK, is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts, and talks about the condition.

Lucy Good, Bluestone’s Training and Development Manager said: “The sessions were incredibly useful and gave a terrific insight into what those who have dementia might have to deal with on a daily basis.

“We were told that one in fourteen people in the UK has some form of dementia, and what was most illuminating was how we can change the way we perceive the illness and what we can do to make a positive impact on people living with the disease. Our staff is also planning to further support the initiative by taking part in the Alzheimer’s Society Elf Day on the 8 December 8, to help raise money for people affected by dementia.”

Chris Stokes, Community Fundraiser for South West Wales, who delivered the sessions at Bluestone, said: “Dementia is the leading cause of death in Wales (with 45,000 people currently living with the condition) so Bluestone is likely to have staff and customers who have been, in some way, affected by this horrible disease.

“Feedback from the sessions was very positive and we are delighted that Bluestone has shown an interest in becoming accredited as a Dementia Friendly Business.”
