More Families Are Taking The Grandparents On UK Staycations
More UK families are turning to staycations in the UK with generational family members as they seek increased quality time together, according to families who have done just that.
Having time together and sharing the cost of a holiday is among the reasons why more families are taking holidays with grandparents, siblings, and other families.
Over the past two years, Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire has seen a significant increase in the number of generational family bookings.
“Families have often taken breaks with grandparents, siblings, and friends, but we’re seeing a definite increase in the numbers looking for larger accommodation or booking together to spend time together on a staycation over the past two years in particular,” said Yvonne Buckingham, Head of Marketing at Bluestone.
Zoe Corkhill, a web designer and mother from Birmingham, went on holiday with her husband, two young children, and parents to Bluestone recently.
“My parents live in Cornwall and we live in Birmingham and we don’t get to see them that often, so getting together for a holiday is a rare treat, and it's great for our children to spend quality time together with their grandparents,” said Zoe.
“Children grow up so fast and being able to share that time and experience with your parents is a rare opportunity.
“You don’t have to be in each other's pocket all the time. On our last break at Bluestone, we stayed in a Grassholm lodge, which meant we could all stay under one roof but at the same time, we could all go in our different directions and enjoy activities as we pleased.
“It’s definitely an advantage to have grandparents or other family members or friends with you on holiday. As parents, we can have some rare time together as a couple while my parents enjoy some quality time with their grandchildren on outdoor or indoor activities or in the water park. All the more excuse for me to have a spa treatment.”
“There’s also the financial aspect of sharing the costs of such a holiday, which isn’t the main reason, but it all helps.”
Yvonne Buckingham said they had seen increases in families coming from Bristol and Bath, the Midlands, Gloucestershire, Swindon, and Reading with many as family groups at Bluestone.
“Many families are choosing to have a break as a small unit and another with wider family members throughout the year. Talking to them, it tends to be a mixture of an opportunity to be together and in some cases, grandparents are treating the family to a break or they’re sharing the cost.”
“Either way, it’s great for families to experience ‘free range’ fun together and create memories for all.”
