Whitesands Bay

A large expanse of pale gold sand, overlooked by the majestic Carn Llidi, Whitesands Bay or, Porthmawr in Welsh, is a jewel of the North Pembrokeshire coast.

Situated on the St David’s Penninsular, Whitesands is regarded as one of the best surfing spots on the West Coast, and you’ll see surfers and kitesurfers regularly flocking to this breathtaking setting, to tackle the waves.

It’s not all about the thrill seekers though, as Whitesands Bay’s spacious beach is ideal for families to enjoy time on the sand. The surf break is towards the wilder north end of the beach but move south and you can enjoy calmer waters in a series of sheltered bays.

When at the beach, it’s impossible to ignore the commanding Carn Llidi, which dominates the skyline.

At 594 feet it is not a relaxing climb, but if you do tackle it, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views out over the landscape.There’s even a chance to explore some ancient monuments on your trek with a number of neolithic burial chambers and stone hut circles nestled into the side of the rocky outcrop.

How To Get There:

Whitesands Bay is around two miles north of St Davids and is signposted from the city, making it easy to locate. The beach has its own large carpark, with access down to the beach via steps and a ramp.

Nearest Carpark

The beach has an adjacent carpark (SA62 6PS). It does get busy in summer, so if you fail to find a space, park in St Davids and catch the Celtic Coaster Shuttle Bus from Oriel y Parc down to the beach.

There is good access from the beach with a ramp down to the sand.

Nearby

Make sure to take advantage of the coast path, which runs through the beach. Southwards will take you along the coast to the beaches of Porthselau and St. Justinian’s where you can enjoy spectacular views out to Ramsey Island.

Along the path to the north are the beautiful bays of Porthlleuog and Porthmelgan, that are only accessible by foot. Beyond the coast path, you can visit the charming St Davids. Steeped in history and mythology, with lots to explore.
