Bamboo Toothbrush Campaign: Environment and Oral healthcare

The health of the environment and our own health are closely tied together and even the smallest changes can make a big difference. We're taking part in Brushbox's "Buy One, Give One, Plant one" scheme, to shows how something as simple as a toothbrush can have a big impact.

Sustainable smiles: Keeping your mouth and the planet happy

We're getting better at recycling household waste, especially in the kitchen, but what about the bathroom cupboard? Items we use daily, and change regularly, like a toothbrush might be important to oral health, but they're also impacting the environment. With this in mind, we're working with oral health care company, Brushbox to raise awareness of important issues:  reducing single-use plastic and the importance of good oral hygiene.

What we're doing

The campaign with Brushbox is a special one and will help in three different, but important ways:

1. Buy One: 1500 bamboo toothbrushes distributed to guests

Between the 20th and 30th of August, we'll be encouraging our guests to switch to an eco-friendly toothbrush by leaving one special bamboo toothbrush created by Brushbox for Bluestone, in each lodge. The 1500 wooden toothbrushes will be branded Bluestone and will be accompanied by an information leaflet explaining the "Buy 1, Give 1, Plant 1" scheme.

2. Give One: 1500 bamboo toothbrushes donated to local children services

1500 of Brushbox's children’s toothbrushes will be distributed across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire to those in need including Children services, Paediatric Palliative Care Teams, Cilgerran Children's Ward, and Paul Sartori.

3. Plant One: 1500 trees planted in Bluestone's name

1500 trees will be planted in Bluestone's name as part of a rainforest reinstatement program across the globe that Brushbox supports, highlighting the need to consider how even the smallest habits can have a big impact.

Why is it important?

You probably don't give much thought to your toothbrush, but you should because recognising your own impact on the environment is an important step in creating a more sustainable world. The majority of toothbrushes are made using single-use plastics and with advice to change your brush every three months, it means each person gets through at least four or five brushes a year. That might not seem like a lot, but when you consider that for the whole population the numbers start to pile up and it's estimated that the UK throws away potentially 200 million brushes a year*, alone. It takes 400 years for a plastic toothbrush to degrade*, which means every single toothbrush you've ever used is still out there somewhere!

What is Brushbox?

Brushbox is an eco oral health care company, that produces sustainable and eco-friendly products. We've teamed up with them on this campaign to highlight the importance of oral health and also, the need to make sustainable choices!

Here's what Mike Donavon, Brushbox founder, and CEO, had to say about the exciting project:

"My family has been visiting Bluestone for over 10 years, ever since our children were little, and we've seen first-hand how committed they are to helping the environment, families, and the local community - Brushbox couldn't be prouder to partner with Bluestone and help on their journey to make our world a better place for all of us."
